Experience Wake-Up Call with the Artist This ANZAC Weekend

This Sunday, step beyond the usual Sculpture Trail experience and into something far more immersive.

Join New Zealand sculptor Nicholas Duval-Smith on-site at Brick Bay for a special activation of Wake-Up Call (a vibration from within)—a rare opportunity to not only see the work, but experience it as it was intended.

Make a morning of it—arrive a little earlier, grab a coffee from the Glass House, and ease into the trail before the experience begins.

Sunday 26 April:

  • 10:00–10:30am – Arrive early for coffee and a relaxed start to the trail
  • 10:30am – Begin walking (allow ~30 minutes to reach the sculpture)
  • 11:00am – Artist Talk at the sculpture
  • From 11:30am onwards – 10-minute live sound sessions running throughout the day

To attend the Artist Talk, we recommend allowing time to walk the trail at a comfortable pace and settle into the space before it begins. If you’re joining for the sound sessions, you’re welcome to arrive at any time and take part as the work comes to life.

All sessions are included with your standard Sculpture Trail ticket.

More than a sculpture

Set within native bush at the top of the trail’s figure-eight loop, Wake-Up Call reveals itself gradually.

Three corten steel legs rise from the landscape, supporting a suspended bronze bell that feels at once ancient and other-worldly. There’s a sense of anticipation as you approach—something between curiosity and reverence.

But this is not a work to simply observe.

Visitors are invited to sit beneath the bell, stepping inside a chamber lined with 24k gold leaf. The experience is immediate and disarming—an intimate, almost sacred space that shifts your relationship with the work entirely.

A vibration from within

The defining element of Wake-Up Call is not just its form, but its sound.

Using a hand-carved mallet, the bell can be gently struck, releasing a spectrum of resonant frequencies. Inside, those vibrations unfold in full—surrounding, grounding, and deeply affecting. The effect is both calming and energising, creating a moment of stillness that feels increasingly rare.

As Duval-Smith reflects, “Bells can connect us with the metaphysical, within and without… an opportunity to connect with the self or to broadcast wishes of hope or joy.”

Why this experience matters

Nicholas Duval-Smith’s practice is rooted in connection—between people and place, material and meaning. Drawing on a lifelong fascination with natural forms and scale, his work invites participation, interpretation, and presence.

Wake-Up Call embodies this approach completely.

It asks for trust. It rewards curiosity. And when activated, it becomes something more than sculpture—a shared, sensory experience that lingers well beyond the moment itself.
