Artist Bio
Marita Hewitt is a New Zealand-based artist currently living and working in Kerikeri, Northland. She studied at Auckland University of Technology, earning a Bachelor of Visual Arts (2004) and later a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching (2009).
Hewitt has exhibited extensively across New Zealand and internationally. She has held numerous solo exhibitions, including Here I Am (2021) at The Art Counsel in Wellington and Material Efficiencies (2020) at Page Galleries. Her work has also been featured in notable group exhibitions such as Acervo Rotativo (2021) in São Paulo, Brazil, and The Nomadic Art Gallery (2021) at Connells Bay Sculpture Park, Waiheke Island.
Throughout her career, Hewitt has received significant recognition for her practice. She was awarded the People’s Choice Award at the National Contemporary Art Award (2018), was a finalist in the Portage Award (2015), and received the Merit Award in the same competition in 2013. That same year, she was named First Runner-Up in the Wallace Art Awards.
In addition to her exhibitions and awards, Hewitt has participated in prestigious residencies, including The Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China (2016), funded in part by Creative NZ, and the Vermont Studio Center in the USA (2014), awarded by the Wallace Arts Trust. Her work also extends into public art projects, most notably her commission Our Kerikeri, a large-scale artwork recognizing Tūhono (200-year anniversary), which has been ongoing since 2020.
Hewitt's work is held in major collections, including the Wallace Trust Collection, PricewaterhouseCoopers Collection, Parkin Collection, and the Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Art Gallery. Her practice continues to evolve, exploring themes of materiality, process, and transformation.
