Sustainability at Brick Bay

Meeting the needs of today, without adversely impacting on the needs of tomorrow.

We are constantly striving to introduce sustainable practices to the property; this is our responsibility to the people who drink our wine, the people who work at Brick Bay and to the wider environment.

We have a significant ongoing native planting programme on the farm, and we work with the local council on pest prevention, particularly targeting rats and possums, which has resulted in increased native bird life in the surrounding area. Areas of the farm are also managed as ecological compensation areas with no fertilizer or pesticide imputs.

Our pigs and chickens recycle all our food waste generated from The Glass House, while our beehives will assist in pollination of plant life on the wider farm, thus encouraging biodiversity.

Within The Glass House itself we use biodegradable cleaners, recycle all our glass and plastic, work towards a paper-free office and shred waste paper for composting . Our brochures are printed on paper stock from certified sustainably managed forests. We prepare most of our food in The Glass House kitchen and source product from local sources wherever possible, thus reducing our carbon footprint. Rain water supplies our Glass House needs and waste water is disposed of through a sustainable onsite system.

Our management practices, like the environment itself, are constantly evolving and we will continue to improve, grow and learn from our land.

Sustainable Winegrowing

New Zealand Sustainable Winegrowing

At Brick Bay we are aware that it is the environment that makes our wines unique. The conservation and improvement of our land is paramount to ensure the quality of our wine today and well into the future.

Some sustainable initiatives at Brick Bay are:

  • To avoid soil overfertilising, we constantly test and monitor the nutrient status of the soil.
  • We prefer to naturally nurture our soil and promote soil micro-organisms by composting and the use of cover crops.
  • We aim for minimal chemical intervention and use the softest sprays possible- including many certified organic sprays.
  • Biodynamic and Homeopathic remedies are also part of our disease control.
  • Undervine cultivation, whereby the weed roots are cut rather then sprayed, reduces the need for herbicides. This cultivation also forces the vine roots deeper into a more minerally rich soil.
  • We actively encourage biodiversity in the vineyard, providing habitat for beneficial insects by planting large swathes of wild flowers and host plants.
  • Inter-row cover crops further encourage biological disease control and remove excess water from the soil at ripening.

Frogs as Bio-Indicators

We are pleased with the many frogs populating our lakes. Because of their permeable skin, chemicals and other pollutants flow directly into their bodies with devastating effect. The large frog population at Brick Bay is living proof of a healthy environment, for the frog and you!
