Incendiary Artwork

A striking new sculpture by David McCracken has landed at Brick Bay. Incendiary Artwork is a gigantic bomb. Sitting quietly in a clearing this bomb threatens to explode, causing a raging fire throughout the bush. This volatile prospect is offset by the brightly coloured, playful nature of the work.

The appearance of the sculpture resembles an inflated helium balloon but is infact, made from stainless steel. Created by his own hands, the artist has perfected a technique of inflating sealed sheets of metal for this ‘blow-up’ effect.

McCracken admires the aerodynamic purity and formal beauty of the ‘grand slam’ bombs designed by Barnes Wallace during World War II, motivating him to embark on this new series of work.
